What the Bible Says About Families
Isaiah 61 — “Rebuild, Restore, Renew”
God invites us to believe the promises He has spoken over us and our families. Scripture shows a clear pattern of how He forms us, shapes us, and continues His work through generations.
Rebuild — Created With Value, Called to Relationship
God begins by establishing our worth. From the very start, He makes it clear that every person is intentionally created and deeply known.
- We are made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27).
- He knit us together with care and craftsmanship (Psalm 139:13).
- Before we were born, He knew us and placed us in this moment on purpose (Jeremiah 1:5).
- We are His masterpiece, created for meaningful purpose (Ephesians 2:10).
- Jesus Himself welcomed children, showing their value in God’s kingdom (Matthew 19:14).
When we understand our God-given value, we can begin rebuilding our families on a foundation of identity and relationship.
Restore — Building Structure for Life as God Designed
Once identity is established, God provides structure—practical ways to live out His design within our homes.
- Teach God’s Word in everyday moments: sitting, walking, lying down, rising (Deuteronomy 6:7; 11:19).
- Raise children with discipline and instruction from the Lord (Ephesians 6:4).
- Discipline is not punishment; it’s guidance—like bumpers on a bowling lane that keep us moving in the right direction.
- Love includes correction (Proverbs 13:24).
- The principle matters more than the method. How each family applies it will reflect upbringing, convictions, and preferences.
- Mutual submission—honoring one another out of reverence for Christ—shapes the entire household (Ephesians 5).
Restoration happens as families embrace God’s structure with humility and love.
Renew — Passing Life Through Generations
God’s design doesn’t stop with one generation. He intends for His life and truth to continue flowing through families.
- “Train up a child…” and the impact carries into old age (Proverbs 22:6).
- Honor produces life—this is a spiritual principle (Exodus 20:12).
- This applies in every direction: parents to children, children to parents, and generation to generation.
- God promises unfailing love to a thousand generations of those who love and obey Him (Exodus 20:6).
Renewal is the ongoing reproduction of God’s life through families who honor His ways.
When the Cycle Breaks
Scripture also shows what happens when a generation stops walking with God.
After Joshua’s death, “another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what He had done for Israel.” As a result, they turned toward evil (Judges 2:7–11).
When the cycle breaks, families lose direction, identity, and spiritual inheritance.
How to Start—or Restart—the Cycle
Whether beginning fresh or rebuilding from brokenness, God gives clear steps:
- Read God’s Word and talk about it—individually and together. His Word lights our path (Psalm 119:105).
- Recognize that every person carries immense God-given value.
- Walk in humility: “Don’t be selfish… be humble… take an interest in others… have the same attitude as Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:3–5)
Renewal begins with simple, consistent steps of honoring God and honoring one another.
