4 FUN ACTIVITIES TO DO WITH YOUR KIDS (WHILE ON LOCKDOWN)
Consider it a blessing to be able to spend time with your kids that you normally don’t have. I know things are crazy outside, but this lockdown could be one of the most amazing times to build memories with your kids. Who knows, you might even discover a new talent or hobby!
Given this unprecedented opportunity to be together why not try something new that you normally would not have time for?
Here are a few things you could try with your family. See what happens. Why not? There’s really nothing to lose, and everything to gain.
#1 – Try an art project that none of you have ever done
If nobody in your home paints, then try painting. Maybe each of you could try painting the same animal. Or you could each try painting a different animal. Maybe you could try painting a landscape, a superhero, the picture from one of your favorite books or movie posters. The opportunities are endless, and you can enjoy each other’s work, and have some great conversations in the process. If you already paint, then try building sculptures!
#2 – Pick one of your favorite books and read it aloud together
Assign each person a character from the book and make sure each person has a distinct funny voice for each character. Then when you read it, you will all be actors on a stage. It will be a load of fun, and the laughs will continue. What a great memory builder.
#3 – Pick a sport that is obscure to you and become an expert in it
Maybe you don’t understand cricket. Why not watch it on Youtube and learn how to play it, then watch a couple of games and see if you can understand the rules and terminology. Perhaps this is a time to watch curling. It’s in the Olympics, but how often do you really watch it? Curling is actually quite intriguing when you get into it. Lacrosse may be something you’ve had an interest in, but it’s not available in your state. Why not watch it together and figure out how to play? Or rugby, or darts, or hatchet throwing. The opportunities are endless, and YouTube is full of resources that you can watch together. Heck, maybe you could even build a course in your yard or house and play together!
#4 – Share your interests and hobbies with your kids
Maybe you love old movies from the 40s and 50s. Perhaps you are a civil war buff, or you are in to hot rods, or you love to sew and your kids don’t know how to sew. Pick something that you enjoy and take this extra time to pass it on to your kids. Enjoy it together.
And just the opposite of this, find something that your child is interested in (that you maybe have no interest in) and take the time to learn and understand why they are intrigued by it. Yes, it may not be fun at first, but when you can see your child light up and enjoy the process of teaching you about this, their self-confidence will go through the roof.
This opportunity for time spent together is unprecedented!
Whatever you do during this time, take some time that we may never have again with our kids and learn something and do something new. You never know what may come out of it. You may have been reminded (by Facebook posts) that Isaac Newton stayed home during the bubonic plague and discovered the theory of gravity and other things that are above my pay grade. You might have a little genius on your hands and you didn’t even know it!
The bottom line is we need to make memories during this time that we would normally not have time to make.
God bless!
